Researchers Identify Specific Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences that Raise the Risk of Alcohol Use During Pregnancy

Early life adversity has profound, ongoing effects on mental health and later behavior, such as mild to moderate drinking during pregnancy, according to a new study. Around 10% of fetuses are exposed to alcohol, which helps explain the prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, affecting 1.5-5% of US schoolchildren. Alcohol use among women of childbearing age continues to be a significant public health concern. Drinking in pregnancy can reflect a range of factors, including hazardous drinking before pregnancy, maternal depression or anxiety, and maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). It is not clear, however, how risk factors differentially influence behaviors.
