Heavy Drinking Can Accelerate a Decline in Brain White Matter in Young Adults

White matter is found in the deeper tissues of the brain, playing a critical role in helping the body process information. Previous research has shown that alcohol has neurotoxic effects on white matter. A new study has used neuroimaging to show that alcohol can affect white matter microstructure even in younger adults with an alcohol use disorder (AUD). These results and others will be shared at the 49th annual scientific meeting of the Research Society on Alcohol (RSA) in San Antonio, Texas.
