Why Alcohol May Hit Harder After Weight-Loss Surgery

Bariatric or weight-loss surgery originated in the 1950s to treat severe obesity. Research published in the mid-2000s showed that some people might be at higher risk for alcohol misuse after bariatric surgery. A new study has found that both of the two of the most common procedures - sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery - can help alcohol reach the brain faster and harder. These results and others will be shared at the 49th annual scientific meeting of the Research Society on Alcohol (RSA) in San Antonio, Texas.
