Young Adults with a Family History of Alcohol Use Disorder Report Greater Anxiety Sensitivity, Linked to Mistreatment During Childhood

Anxiety sensitivity (AS) is the fear of anxiety-related sensations - such as a racing heart or sweating - based on belief these symptoms are dangerous enough to cause a heart attack or lead to death. A new study examines to what extent an individual's family history of alcohol use disorder (AUD), and adverse childhood experiences, may contribute to anxiety sensitivity during their adulthood. Findings will be shared at the 49th annual scientific meeting of the Research Society on Alcohol (RSA) in San Antonio, Texas.
