Couple Coping May Ease Depression After Gastrointestinal Cancer

A research team has found that dyadic coping--the way couples jointly manage stress--partly explains the association between fear of cancer recurrence and depression among middle-aged and older survivors of gastrointestinal cancer. Survivors reporting greater fear tended to experience less effective coping with their spouses and more severe depressive symptoms. The findings highlight the value of involving partners in psychological care and could inform couple-based coping-skills training and supportive interventions designed to improve emotional well-being during cancer recovery.
