What is the most important information I should know about torsemide?

You should not use this medicine if you are allergic to sulfa drugs or if you are unable to urinate.

What is torsemide?

Torsemide is a loop diuretic (water pill) that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing the salt to instead be passed in your urine.

Torsemide treats fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, or kidney failure. This medication is also used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Torsemide may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking torsemide?

You should not use torsemide if you are allergic to it, or if:

  • you are unable to urinate;
  • you have a chronic liver problems such as cirrhosis or hepatitis;
  • you are allergic to povidone (sometimes contained in iodine, Betadine);
  • you are allergic to sulfa drugs.

To make sure torsemide is safe for you, tell your doctor if:

  • you have heart disease;
  • you are on a low-salt diet;
  • you have liver disease or kidney disease (unless you are taking torsemide for edema related to liver or kidney problems); or
  • you need to have any type of x-ray or CT scan using a dye that is injected into your veins.

Torsemide is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

It is not known whether torsemide passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Torsemide is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.

How should I take torsemide?

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not use this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

If you have cirrhosis or other liver problems, your doctor may want to give your first dose of this medicine in a hospital or clinic setting to quickly treat any serious side effects that occur.

You may take torsemide with or without food.

Call your doctor if you have ongoing vomiting or diarrhea, or if you are sweating more than usual. You can easily become dehydrated while taking this medicine, which can lead to severely low blood pressure or a serious electrolyte imbalance.

While using torsemide, you may need frequent medical tests and blood pressure checks. Your blood and urine may both be tested if you have been vomiting or are dehydrated.

If you are being treated for high blood pressure, keep using this medicine even if you feel well. High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You may need to use blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life.

Your condition may be treated with a combination of drugs. Use all medications as directed by your doctor. Do not change your doses or medication schedule without your doctor's advice.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

Overdose symptoms may include severe forms of some of the side effects listed in this medication guide.

What should I avoid while taking torsemide?

Avoid becoming overheated or dehydrated during exercise and in hot weather. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink. In some cases, drinking too much liquid can be as unsafe as not drinking enough.

What are the possible side effects of torsemide

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor right away if you have signs of an electrolyte imbalance, such as:

  • drowsiness, lack of energy;
  • leg cramps, muscle weakness or limp feeling;
  • fast or irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, feeling restless;
  • a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
  • nausea, vomiting;
  • dry mouth, increased thirst; or
  • little or no urinating.

Also call your doctor at once if you have:

  • ringing in your ears, sudden hearing loss;
  • sudden numbness or weakness;
  • severe headache, problems with speech or balance;
  • chest pain, sudden cough, rapid breathing;
  • swelling or warmth in one or both legs;
  • kidney problems --little or no urination, painful or difficult urination, swelling in your feet or ankles, feeling tired or short of breath;
  • dehydration symptoms --feeling very thirsty or hot, being unable to urinate, heavy sweating, or hot and dry skin; or
  • low potassium --leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, fluttering in your chest, increased thirst or urination, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness or limp feeling.

Common side effects may include:

  • increased urination.

What other drugs will affect torsemide?

Many drugs can interact with torsemide. Not all possible interactions are listed here. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any you start or stop using, especially:

  • cholestyramine, lithium, phenytoin, probenecid, warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven);
  • an intravenous (IV) antibiotic medicine;
  • any other diuretic medicine;
  • antifungal medicine --fluconazole, voriconazole;
  • heart or blood pressure medicine --amiodarone, candesartan, digoxin, enalapril, lisinopril, olmesartan, valsartan, and others;
  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) --ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), naproxen (Aleve), celecoxib, diclofenac, indomethacin, meloxicam, and others;
  • salicylates --aspirin, Nuprin Backache Caplet, Kaopectate, KneeRelief, Pamprin Cramp Formula, Pepto-Bismol, Tricosal, Trilisate, and others or
  • steroid medicine --oxandrolone, prednisone, and others.

This list is not complete and many other drugs can interact with torsemide. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Give a list of all your medicines to any healthcare provider who treats you.
