Fertile Window
When ovulation occurs, a mature egg is released from a follicle in the ovary. The remaining empty follicle collapses to form a structure called the corpus luteum which secretes estrogen and progesterone; together, these hormones inhibit menstruation and prepare the uterine lining for a fertilized egg to be implanted. The presence or absence of ovulation and the quality of the corpus luteum function may be evaluated in the following ways:
- by measuring basal body temperature;
- by performing an endometrial biopsy to judge the quality of your uterine lining;
- by running lab tests for serum progesterone,
- by transvaginal ultrasound; or
- with an ovulation predictor kit.
