Miscarriage: Vacuum Aspiration

Topic Overview

Vacuum aspiration can be used to empty the uterus after an incomplete early miscarriage. It's also called suction aspiration or dilation and aspiration. The doctor uses a hollow tube called a cannula. It is attached by tubing to a vacuum device. The cannula is passed through the vagina into the uterus. The pump is then turned on, and the tissue is removed from the uterus.
