INFORMATION FROM THE NIH


Founded in 1887, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today is one of the world's foremost medical research centers, and the Federal focal point for medical research in the United States. Simply described, the goal of NIH is to acquire new knowledge to help prevent, detect, diagnose, and treat disease and disability, from the rarest genetic disorder to the common cold. Congenital Bilateral Absence of Vas Deferens
Congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens occurs in men when the tubes that carry sperm from the testes fail to develop normally. DES (Diethylstilbestrol) Sons
DES Sons are defined as men born between 1938 and 1971 who were exposed to DES before birth. Some DES Sons have been concerned that DES exposure might be linked to infertility. Epididymitis
Epididymitis is an inflammation of the epididymis, the tubular structure that connects the testicle with the vas deferens.

Orchitis
Orchitis is an inflammation of one or both of the testicles, often caused by infection. It is usually a consequence of epididymitis, which is inflammation of the epididymis, the tube which connects the vas deferens and the testicle. The most common viral cause of orchitis is mumps.
